About Terme Luigiane - sulphur pools

The Terme Luigiane are on the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Cosenza, straddling the municipalities of Guardia Piemontese and Acquappesa. They are known for their hyperthermal sulphur springs, which over time gave rise to a large complex of spa buildings. Before reaching the sea, the sulphurous stream flowing from the springs forms a few natural pools with a striking emerald-green colour.

We include the Terme Luigiane in this guide with the status "to be checked", and we want to be transparent about why. In recent years the spa has been at the centre of a long dispute between the two municipalities and the company that ran it, with periods of closure; today it is managed by the regional company Terme Sibarite and, as of June 2026, the relaunch plan was still the subject of a question in the regional council. We found no recent, reliable sources confirming whether, and where, you can bathe for free in the stream's pools today.

For the same reason we don't give the water temperature, opening times, prices or parking: we prefer to leave these fields empty rather than provide unverified data. If you live in the area or have been recently, you would help us a lot by sending a report from the Report a hot spring page.

In any case, the area is worth a visit. Guardia Piemontese is a fascinating village, home to a community of Waldensian origin that still keeps a language derived from Occitan. The coast between Paola, Cetraro and Diamante offers beaches, seaside villages and genuine Calabrian cooking.

If you're looking for a Calabrian free hot spring that is definitely accessible, the most reliable choice at the moment is the gurna of the Terme di Caronte, at Lamezia Terme, about an hour's drive south.

Remember that hyperthermal water can be very hot when it leaves the spring: even if you do find accessible pools along the stream, always test the water with your hand and choose spots where it has already cooled. Also avoid entering fenced-off areas or the grounds of the closed spa buildings.
