Child-friendly free hot springs
Not every free hot spring suits young children: the water can be too hot, the path steep or the bottom slippery. Here are the ones we consider best for families.
Updated 21 October 2026
Taking children to a free hot spring can be a wonderful experience: hot water in the open air, steam, the colours of the travertine. But young children overheat much faster than adults, and many natural pools have temperatures above 40 °C, demanding access or uneven bottoms.
That's why, on each hot spring's page, we say whether we think it suits children. We base this on three criteria: water temperature, ease of access (no exposed paths or long staircases) and safety of the place. The list below sorts them from coolest to warmest.

Our family favourites
- In summer, cool water: the Caldane di Gracciano and Rio Foino at Bobbio, at around 20 °C, are real natural pools for cooling off. The Bozzetti at Equi Terme and Lu Vurghe at Acquasanta Terme are a little warmer.
- In spring and autumn, lukewarm water: the Bagni di Craveggia, at about 28 °C, with an easy walk from Switzerland, and the Grotta delle Ninfe at Cerchiara, with an equipped pool at around 30 °C.
- Hot water, with care: the lower pools at Saturnia, the Bagno Grande at San Casciano dei Bagni and the pool below Bagno Vignoni. Here the water is 35-40 °C: short soaks and frequent breaks.
At the Bagnaccio near Viterbo, which is managed and charges a fee, under-14s may only use the large central pool.
Golden rules with children
- Short soaks: in water above 37 °C, just a few minutes at a time, then out to cool down.
- Plenty of drinking water, before, during and after.
- Non-slip shoes: travertine and wet rocks are treacherous.
- Never alone: there are no lifeguards at free hot springs.
- Heads above water: sulphurous water shouldn't be drunk and irritates the eyes.
- Ask your paediatrician if your child is very young or has health problems.
