Northern Lazio sits on an ancient volcanic landscape, and the area around Viterbo is one of the richest thermal basins in Italy. Here the water rises at very high temperatures, between 50 and 60 °C, and fills pools that are free or very cheap, little more than an hour's drive from Rome.
In the Tuscia area you'll find the Piscine Carletti, open at night too, and the Bullicame mentioned by Dante, while the Bagnaccio is run by an association that charges a small fee. Towards the sea, inland from Civitavecchia, are the pools of the Ficoncella. For each one we state clearly whether it is really free or needs a small payment, and which rules apply.
