About Sasso Pisano - thermal pools and washhouses
Sasso Pisano is a small village in the Colline Metallifere, in the Larderello area, where the earth literally smokes: steam vents, fumaroles and hot ground reveal a volcanic underground that is still active. In this almost lunar landscape there are a few small pools and old washhouses fed by thermal water, a little-known destination that appeals to people looking for places off the beaten track.
According to the source we consulted, the water reaches the old washhouses near the cemetery at around 36 °C, while two small natural pools lie near the Bagnone, an ancient Etruscan thermal site excavated in the area. Don't expect big pools: these are small, intimate spots, to be enjoyed discreetly and with respect for the local community.
The most convenient spot is the old thermal washhouse near the cemetery, also listed on the official Val di Cecina tourism website: a tub covered by a small roof on columns, with 36 °C water flowing from a tap, free and always accessible. It's small and holds about ten people at most. Nearby there are other, hotter springs, such as the one by the sports ground and the pools near the Bagnone, where the water can really scald.
The visit goes perfectly with the trail through the Sasso Pisano geothermal park, a path among steam and coloured rocks. By staying on the marked routes you can watch the fumaroles safely: never go near the steam emissions, which can be scalding and contain gas. Nearby you can also visit Larderello, with its geothermal museum, and Monterotondo Marittimo with the Biancane.
This is a place for people who love exploring: few visitors, no facilities and an environment unique in Italy. Bring walking shoes, water and a towel, and if you find the pools, treat them with care and leave them exactly as you found them.
If you want to make a full day of it, we suggest starting in the morning with the geothermal trail, stopping for lunch at one of the small restaurants of the Val di Cecina and spending the afternoon looking for the pools and washhouses. In the rain the place loses much of its charm: better to pick a dry day, perhaps in autumn or winter, when the hot water in the washhouse is even more welcome.
