About Sorgente di Olmitello (Olmitello spring)

The Olmitello spring is a pool of fresh thermal water behind Maronti beach, at Barano d'Ischia. For years it was one of the favourite spots for anyone looking for a free hot soak on the island, a stone's throw from the sea, in a very atmospheric natural setting in the valley that runs down to the beach.

We include it in this guide for completeness and to save you a wasted trip: according to the most recent sources we consulted, the spring is currently closed to the public for safety works. We don't know when it will reopen, or in what condition: that's why its status is shown as "closed" and its temperature as "to be checked".

If you have up-to-date news about it reopening, you can let us know from the Report a hot spring page: we'll update this page as soon as possible. Meanwhile, there are good alternatives in the area. Sorgeto Bay, at Forio, is Ischia's most famous free hot spring, reachable by a flight of steps or by water taxi. The Spiaggia delle Fumarole, between Sant'Angelo and the Maronti, lets you feel the volcanic heat in the sand, although you can't bathe in the emission area.

The Maronti is still one of the longest and most beautiful beaches on the island, ideal for a day by the sea. Nearby there are also paid spas, such as Cavascura and Nitrodi, which are not free hot springs but can be an option if you're looking for an organised thermal experience.

When the spring reopens, the usual rules for free hot springs apply: no soap, no rubbish, care with the hot water and respect for a fragile place that the local community is trying to protect.

We recommend checking the situation before planning a day around it: ask at the Barano tourist office or at accommodation in the area, which usually know the state of the island's springs well. The closure concerns the spring, not Maronti beach, which remains freely accessible.
