About Spiaggia delle Fumarole and Maronti

The Spiaggia delle Fumarole, in the area of Sant'Angelo and the long Maronti beach, is one of the places where you can best feel Ischia's volcanic nature. Here the heat doesn't come from a spring but from underground: very hot steam and gases rise through the sand, which in places becomes so scorching you can't walk on it barefoot.

It's important to be clear about what to expect: there are no hot pools to soak in. The fumarole area is not for bathing, and the sand can reach temperatures close to 100 °C below the surface. The experience is one of natural sand bathing and contact with the heat of the earth, together with a swim in a sea that, along this stretch, is at normal temperature.

People used to cook eggs, potatoes and fish under the hot sand here, but digging and cooking are now forbidden. We have classified the place as "to be checked" because, according to our sources, with order no. 14 of 20 April 2026 the municipality of Serrara Fontana temporarily banned bathing in the sea at Sant'Angelo, after ARPAC tests linked to a fault in the underwater pipeline. The ban remains in force until new samples come back clear: before you go, check the municipality's official notice board or ask locally.

You get there on foot from Sant'Angelo in about ten minutes, or by water taxi. Sant'Angelo is a pedestrianised village, so the car must be left at the entrance to the village. Not far away is the Olmitello spring, a historic thermal pool that is currently closed to the public for safety works.

Bring sturdy flip-flops, water and a towel, and never leave children alone near the emission areas. If you want a real hot soak, the best choice on the island is still Sorgeto Bay, a short distance away.

Fumaroles are a genuine volcanic phenomenon: as well as heat, they can release gases that are harmful in high concentrations. That's why it's important not to lie down or linger where the steam comes out most strongly, especially with children, elderly people or anyone with breathing problems. A little common sense is all it takes to enjoy a truly unique experience safely.
